Dihydromyricetin (DHM, also called Ampelopsin) is a natural flavonoid enriched in multiple Asian plants. Hovenia dulcis, in particular, has long been applied in traditional Chinese medicine to tackle alcohol poisoning and hangover discomfort (Liang et al. 2014). As a popular supplement raw material, DHM is primarily promoted for hangover relief, thanks to its function of reducing blood alcohol levels and its proven liver-protecting potential.

DHM delivers multiple health benefits, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative and anti-cancer activities. It participates in balancing lipid and glucose metabolism and regulates programmed cell death, with negligible adverse influences on normal cells.

Notably, abundant studies confirm its remarkable hepatoprotective effects. Research focusing on acute liver failure demonstrates that DHM can ameliorate liver lesions caused by alcohol and other hazards (Liu et al. 2017). It effectively shields hepatic cells, relieves liver burden, and is widely adopted in functional food, health supplement and cosmetic industries.
