As a vital intermediate for organic synthesis, acetylacetone reacts with guanidine to synthesize 2-amino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, acting as an essential raw material for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

It can be adopted as a solvent for cellulose acetate, functional additive for gasoline and lubricants, and drier for coatings and varnishes. Besides, it is applicable in fungicides and insecticides. Moreover, acetylacetone works as a catalyst and oxidation accelerator in petroleum cracking, hydrogenation and carbonylation reactions.

It is also utilized to eliminate metal oxides from porous solids and process polypropylenecatalysts. In European and American markets, more than 50% of acetylacetone demand is consumed in antidiarrheal pharmaceuticals and livestock feed additives.
