Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt, CAS#139-33-3
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (commonly shortened to EDTA) features a strong affinity for binding with most metal cations, making it widely applicable across many industrial sectors. EDTA is available in various salt forms, including ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTAS).
EDTA and its salts function as chelating agents in cosmetic products. EDTAS acts as a preservative, sequestrant and stabilizer in food applications. It is added to soft drinks formulated with ascorbic acid and disodium benzoate to reduce benzene formation. EDTA and its salts are also incorporated into paper and paperboard intended for food contact.
EDTAS is approved for use in animal feed, drinking water, and for the treatment of food-producing animals. In the textile industry, EDTA and its salts avoid color shifts of dyed goods caused by impurity metal ions. For pulp and paper manufacturing, they suppress metal ions from catalyzing the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide, a common bleaching agent.
EDTAS finds usage in synthetic rubber production and serves as a corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in industrial systems. Besides, EDTAS and EDTA tripotassium salt are the most widely used anticoagulants.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (CAS#139-33-3)
Product Application
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) belongs to aminopolycarboxylic acids and acts as a hexadentate ligand. It can chelate metal ions, particularly metal cations, to form stable octahedral coordination complexes.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (Disodium EDTA) is widely known as a blood anticoagulant and is associated with pseudothrombocytopenia. It binds to calcium ions in blood to block coagulation reactions, so it is a standard additive for routine hematological examinations. It can also boost the antibacterial performance of lysozyme.
In chelation therapy, EDTA binds calcium ions to help dilate arteries and dissolve atheromatous plaques for atherosclerotic vascular conditions. Additionally, EDTA chelation may reduce oxidative injury, restraining blood lipid peroxidation linked to liver fibrosis.
Beyond medical and laboratory uses, Disodium EDTA serves as an efficient chelating agent across industries:
Food & Beverage: Works as sequestrant, stabilizer and preservative to control trace metal ions, prevent discoloration and slow deterioration; reduces benzene generation in drinks containing ascorbic acid and sodium benzoate.
Cosmetics & Personal Care: Stabilizes formulations, shields active ingredients from metal-induced degradation.
Textile & Dyeing: Eliminates interference from metal impurities to maintain consistent dye color.
Pulp & Paper: Suppresses metal ions from decomposing hydrogen peroxide bleaching agent.
Synthetic Rubber & Industrial Circulation: Applied in rubber synthesis and acts as a carbon steel corrosion inhibitor.
Animal Nutrition: Approved for addition into animal feed and drinking water for food-producing animals.
