Chlorophyllin, CAS#11006-34-1, refers to a family of water-soluble salts and semi-synthetic derivatives naturally derived from chlorophyll. Its most prevalent commercial variant, the sodium‑copper complex, is widely recognized and approved for use as a food colorant / food additive, and it is also applied in complementary and alternative medicine fields.
In alternative medicine applications, Chlorophyllin serves as an auxiliary agent to mitigate unpleasant odors from urine and feces. It helps improve quality of life for patients suffering from fecal incontinence caused by spinal cord injury, colorectal cancer, psychotic disorders, terminal diseases and other related medical conditions. Besides pharmaceutical usage, it is commonly marketed as an over-the-counter herbal dietary supplement.
Chemically, Chlorophyllin has a strong binding affinity with mutagenic compounds. It is capable of binding to hazardous mutagenic substances including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzo[a]pyrene and dibenzo[a,i]pyrene, which helps inhibit their biological activity.
When formulated into topical preparations, Chlorophyllin delivers dual functions for wound management. It can assist wound healing and control malodour arising from cuts, traumas and various skin lesions, including radiation-induced burns. It has been applied for skin injury treatment and odour management in clinical and cosmetic formulations.
