Shellac is a natural bio-based resin secreted by lac insects, harvested and refined to produce commercial grades for multiple industrial applications. It is available in a variety of colors ranging from pale light yellow to deep dark red, presented as hard, brittle resin flakes. The presence or absence of natural wax within the final product is determined by the selected refining process.

Multiple commercial grades of shellac are available to satisfy diverse technical requirements, including bleached shellac, bleached dewaxed shellac, dewaxed and decolorized shellac, dewaxed flake shellac, dewaxed orange shellac, dewaxed shellac, orange shellac, purified shellac, refined bleached shellac, regular bleached shellac, regular waxy shellac, wax-containing shellac, and white shellac.

The raw shellac flakes can be further processed: crushed or milled into coarse granular material or fine powder upon customer request. As a typical variant, bleached shellac is commonly delivered as coarse off-white powder.

Pure shellac is nearly tasteless, with only a subtle, characteristic faint odor. This distinctive natural scent originates from its complex inherent fragrance system. It features outstanding film-forming performance, strong adhesion, good flexibility, insulation property and solvent compatibility.

As a multi-functional natural raw material, shellac is widely used for food glazing coatings, pharmaceutical enteric coating, wood varnish, printing inks, cosmetics, fruit preservation coating, and electrical insulating coatings. It meets international quality standards for food and pharma contact applications.
