Carrageenan, CAS Number 9000-07-1, also named sodium carrageenan, is a natural hydrophilic plant colloid extracted from species of red seaweed (Rhodophyceae). It ranks among the world’s three major seaweed-derived hydrocolloid industrial products, together with alginate and agar.

Raw red algae is subjected to hot water extraction, filtration, concentration, alcohol precipitation, drying and milling to obtain finished carrageenan. The typical appearance is white to off-white or pale yellow fine powder; semi-transparent sheet or shredded forms are also available for certain grades.

Chemically, carrageenan consists of linear sulfated polysaccharides. Depending on molecular structure and gelling properties, it can be categorized into kappa, iota and lambda types, which differ greatly in gel strength, elasticity and viscosity. It dissolves readily in hot water to form a viscous solution or firm gel, while it is barely soluble in cold water but can absorb water and swell.

As a multi-functional food additive, carrageenan acts as thickener, gelling agent, stabilizer and suspending agent. It is widely applied in dairy products, jelly, confectionery, meat products, beverages and baked food. Beyond the food sector, it also finds usage in cosmetics, daily care formulations and pharmaceutical preparations.

It features stable performance over a suitable pH range, excellent compatibility with other gums such as locust bean gum and xanthan gum, and can synergistically improve gel texture and water retention. Our standard grade sodium carrageenan (Type I) is packed in 25kg woven bags with inner PE liner. The minimum order quantity is 1 FCL.
