Triacetin, industrial grade with purity ≥ 99%, appears as a colorless transparent liquid and carries a slight ester odor. It has a melting point of -77℃ and a boiling point of 258℃. Its vapor pressure is 0.01 mmHg at 25℃, and the relative density is 1.159 at 20℃. It is slightly soluble in water, and soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform as well as other organic solvents. It is stable in property, but incompatible with strong oxidants and strong bases.

§ 184.1901(a) Triacetin (C₉H₁₄O₆), also known as 1,2,3-propanetriol triacetate or glyceryl triacetate, is the triester of glycerin and acetic acid. Triacetin can be prepared by heating glycerin with acetic anhydride alone or in the presence of finely divided potassium hydrogen sulfate. It can also be prepared by the reaction of oxygen with a liquid-phase mixture of allyl acetate and acetic acid using a bromide salt as a catalyst.
