Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB, CAS#61789-40-0) is a widely used amphoteric surfactant. The unique performance of amphoteric surfactants originates from their zwitterionic character, which means a single molecule carries both anionic and cationic functional groups.
Thanks to this zwitterionic structure, CAPB exhibits excellent compatibility with anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants across a broad pH range. It delivers rich, stable foam, great detergency and thickening effects, while maintaining low skin and eye irritation compared to many conventional surfactants.
It is extensively applied in personal care and cosmetic formulations including shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers and hand sanitizers. It can reduce the irritation of strong anionic surfactants, boost foam volume and improve the sensory feel of finished products. Besides personal care, it is also used in mild household cleaners, industrial detergents and textile auxiliary formulations.
