Dimethyl sulfoxide-d6 is a sulfur-containing deuterated compound with the molecular formula (CD₃)₂SO. It is a colorless, nearly odorless transparent liquid at room temperature, featuring a freezing point of 18.45°C and a boiling point of 189°C. It carries a faint bitter taste and possesses excellent miscibility; it can be fully mixed with water, alcohols, ethers and esters in any proportion. Meanwhile, it shows strong hygroscopicity, which means it readily absorbs moisture from ambient air, so sealed storage is mandatory to protect product quality.
DMSO-d6 maintains good chemical stability under 140°C. However, prolonged heating at its boiling point will trigger slow decomposition, generating trace aldehydes, sulfides and mercaptan impurities. Its decomposition rate is significantly accelerated under acidic conditions, while alkaline surroundings can effectively suppress such degradation. For this reason, purification of DMSO-d6 generally adopts vacuum distillation technology. During refining, the system pH value is controlled near 8, or sodium oxalate is added as stabilizer to reduce impurity formation and guarantee high isotopic purity for NMR applications.
As a premium deuterated solvent, DMSO-d6 with high deuteration level is widely used for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Its excellent dissolving capacity allows it to dissolve a broad range of organic compounds, pharmaceutical intermediates, natural products and polymer samples that are poorly soluble in other deuterated solvents. An optional grade containing 1% TMS is available for direct chemical shift calibration in NMR testing. Strict quality control is implemented for each batch to ensure low water content and stable isotopic enrichment, delivering consistent, clean spectrum baselines for pharmaceutical R&D and academic laboratory analysis.
